Making Memories

Making Memories

Blogging about the Viridian every month is an opportunity to reflect on how blessed I am to be a member of this thriving community. There is a photography contest happening from May until August for the community titled “Picture Yourself At Viridian.” Contestants have to submit four photos: ‘Make a Splash’, ‘Get Physical’, ‘Be Social’, and ‘One with Nature’. It’s going to be tricky to pick which four photos to submit, since there are so many great memories made in this month alone!

This month adventures started with Ladies Stand Up Paddle Boarding.  It was a picture perfect Saturday out on Lake Viridian. The water was calm, and like glass, it reflected the tranquil landscape. We were greeted at the Viridian Sailing Center with delectable muffins and coffee, courtesy of Dacia and Cynthia, Viridian residence. Sam and Kelly, staff at the Sailing Center, set out the paddle boards and assisted us ladies with boarding. It was a very pampering experience! We set out to explore the lake together, laughing and hanging out.

In the distance, we saw fellow residence planting vegetation by the dock east of Overlook Park. We paddled over to investigate. 5,000 water plants needed to be planted in order to foster local aquatic and bird life. I later came out to volunteer. It was hot work but there was beer, pizza and good company…and lots of mud! What better way to finish the day of pampering with a mud treatment, right?

That Sunday, I woke up to a hand painted Mother’s Day card and chocolates from Lynn, our German exchange student. Since August, she’s been staying with Stephen and I. She had a phenomenal experience in living here in Viridian while attending Trinity High School. This month, her and her fellow exchange students got to put on a cap and gown and be recognized at the Senior Award’s ceremony. And even more exciting, she got to go to prom! Her classmates gathered at our home to get ready. I got some great photos of these gorgeous gowned young ladies in front of the nature preserve before their send off.

Sadly, Lynn will be leaving us in June but not without earning her Texas Drivers License first. She has been very diligently practicing for her driving exam. Stephen reminds her frequently to take it easy on the Autobahn when she gets home…we’re going to miss her dearly. We plan on sending her a Texas size care package of taco seasoning, hot sauce and flaming hot Cheetos.

And at last, Memorial Day Weekend. American flags unfurled throughout the community. Our Saturday morning yoga class ventured to the pristine clear poolside to enjoy the soothing sounds of the waterfalls as we practiced clearing our minds and deep breathing. As we wrapped up with incanting ‘namaste,’ the first group of enthusiastic residence arrived - smiling little tikes with towels and floaty toys in hand. And with a splash, school was out and Summer had arrived! Needless to say, the Pool Opening Luau was packed! It was fun to stop in for a popsicle, visit with neighbors, and watch the Hawaiian dancers teach the kiddos how to dance. My family and I spent Memorial Day cooking out in the back yard, grilling, and playing games. Gathering together is such a simple yet sacred event and I hope that I will never take it for granted for a single moment.

Award-winning Viridian is one of the only master-planned communities in Texas designed to meet Audubon Gold Signature Standards. Boasting acres of lakes, streams and waterways, the enclave offers residents a sailing club, fitness center and activities planned by a full-time lifestyle director. Viridian is located south of Highway 183 and north of Interstate 30 approximately 20 minutes from downtown Dallas and downtown Fort Worth.

Rachel Coward has been a resident of Viridian since May 2016. When not helping people buy and sell homes at DEN Property Group, Rachel — along with husband Stephen — can often be found on Viridian’s trails, biking to River Legacy Park, or at the sailing center testing their skills on an Aero or Quest sailboat. Holding a degree in environmental design from Texas A&M, Rachel particularly admires how the community has been mapped to provide exceptional quality of life, with parks and amenities in walking distance.
